Best: Bryan Cranston to the rescue
There have been some legendary crazy speeches at the Indie Spirit Awards over the years (Ally Sheedy's drunk/high/who knows what she was on best female lead acceptance in 1999 is the first one that comes to mind), but Derek Connolly's rambling acceptance this year may top them all. The first honor of the night went to best first screenplay and Connolly - seemingly wasted out of his mind before even winning - didn't stop as his speech just went on and on. You could see presenter Kerry Washington in the background with her hands to her mouth as if saying "Oh, no. This is a disaster." Just when the audience was close to booing him or heckling him off, Bryan Cranston walked on stage with an empty glass and a bottle of Jameson whiskey and poured it for Connolly. The audience cheered, but our winner was barely fazed and Washington and Cranston had to walk him off anyway. About an hour later Cranston came back and hit one out of the park with co-presenter Amy Poehler while presenting best director. Crantson's reward? He will (likely) be adding a best picture win to his resume tomorrow after "Argo" tops the Oscars.
