Best and Worst of the 2012 Independent Spirit Awards: Seth Rogen, Michelle Williams, 'The Artist'

Can Seth Rogen save a show with little surprises among the winners?

Who's got Spirit?

Who's got Spirit?

The 27th Independent Spirit Awards went off without a hitch Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles.  Hosted by Seth Rogen, "The Artist" (somewhat) shockingly dominated the show, but that might have been the worst thing that could have happened as the inevitable win took away much of the Spirit's usual surprises.  Still, there had to have been something to cheer about during the show, right? To find out, click on the tabs below.

I haven't tuned in to IFC to watch but I'm disappointed that "Take Shelter" won nothing.
I remember a day when the Spirit awards were fairly unique and celebrated being the bastion of different. It's just become another awards show to me now rather than a program that illuminated independent film with many surprises and laughs. Does independent film even truly exist in this day and age? A discussion for another time.

    • Well make your thoughts heard now. After the show is when Film Independent looks at what happened over the last Spirits year and makes changes.

I really don't understand why The Artist was not in the foreign film category when it was financed by the French. I felt it took awards away from films that deserved to win as best picture, director, actor and cinematography. Harvey Weinstein really pulled a fast one here.

JR It's a movie about Hollywood filmed in the US with an American crew and all American actors except for the two leads. Doesn't seem very foreign to me.

You know I really don't want to be one of *those* people because I truly did find The Artist to be perfectly pleasant. But its presence has had a major hand in ruining this awards season and frankly it does anger me because you can't help believe it's more about superficially ticking off boxes - French leads/director! black and white! silent! about Hollywood! - than actual content.

Actually, Michelle said that this time around the only thing she was wearing that she owned was her dignity. Small, but significant distinction. Her acceptance speech was beautiful.
