Best and Worst: Cirque du Soleil
Cirque du Soleil put on a visually fascinating, gravity-defying show that jostled the imagination and warped the physical world into something athletically beautiful. You couldn't take your eyes off of it.
And the performance had nothing to do with the Oscars. Under the generic auspices of "We allowed Cirque to interpret the magic of movies through a series of backbends and contortionists," organizers basically filled dead air with unrelated entertainment. While precious time for Best Score and Best Song were signified by a giant book of sheet music protruding from the floor, a celebration of "movie magic" was baited by circus performers. Watching Uggie chase a tennis ball across the floor for 15 minutes would at least have made more sense.
