Best: "Project Nim"
James Marsh's follow-up to the Oscar-winning "Man on Wire" is partially about a 1970s experiment in which a chimpanzee was raised with a Manhattan family and taught sign language, but it's every bit as much about how we treat the youngest and most impressionable among us, whether human or animal. "Project Nim" initially goes for laughter, but as the danger of anthropomorphizing chimps becomes more and more apparent, the documentary becomes darker and darker, sadder and sadder. Marsh is a good enough filmmaker that you never feel manipulated, though. You just walk out of the theater shaken and moved.
