Best and Worst of the 2011 SAG Awards: Natalie Portman, 'The King's Speech' and Teamsters

Plus: Some reasons why the show needs a format change

Best and Worst: Dickie Eklund crashing Christian Bale's acceptance speech

Best and Worst: Dickie Eklund crashing Christian Bale's acceptance speech

For months, Christian Bale has been nothing but gracious when talking about Dickie Eklund, the man whose life he portrayed in "The Fighter."  To say that Eklund is something of a wild card is an understatement, so when he popped up onto the SAG Awards stage just as Bale was giving his acceptance speech it was awkward, but sweet.  Eklund gave him a hug and Bale provided yet another shout out to a man who has overcome public humiliation to turn his life back around.  At least that's what we thought.  Later in the show, "Fighter" star and producer Mark Wahlberg cockily dropped that he'd told Eklund to go on stage which made it seem less spontaneous and as awkward as it first seemed.

If you pay attention to awards it wouls have been fairly obvious that "The King's Speech" and Betty White were gonna win. TKS has been winning at all the Guild awards. And the SAGs love giving awards to undeserving geezers.

"The King's Speech" is now the frontrunner for the Best Picture. My fingers are still crossed for "The Social Network".

And lets hope we don't have to deal with many speeches from people of "Boardwalk Empire". That show has often been near-awaful and is winning all these awards simply because the HBO/Scorcese connection. Hopefully, "Mad Men" or "Fruday Night Lights" will triumph on Emmy night.

Why do they give supporting awards in film but not in TV?

    • Because of the impression that movies are more important than TV, and that movie actors are more talented than TV actors. Personally, I care a lot more about the TV awards (for one thing, I've seen more of the nominated shows than movies).
