Best and Worst of the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards: Lil Wayne, Beyonce, Lady Gaga

Who made the show worth watching?

Best: Beyonce

Best: Beyonce

I totally forgot that Bey had announced her impending motherhood on the MTV Black Carpet only an hour before, because lady was hoofing it, tackling “Love on Top” with five ascending key changes. And she and her dancers rocked refreshingly modest suited sequins, contrasting the general smuttiness of Pitbull and Ne-Yo’s girl-dripping set. This was a smiling and orderly addition to the show, without the producers or the singer herself continuing to push slow-jammer “1+1.”

I can think of classier places to announce a pregnancy – perhaps without the audience of a Kardashian or every single member of “Jersey Shore – but you can’t help but feel happy for her after a performance like that.
