Best: Janelle Monae, Bruno Mars and B.o.B.
The natural combination of these three musicians made for an entertaining and crowd-pleasing seven minutes, and more genuinely rock 'n' roll than Muse or any of those other guys all night.
Flipping the cameras to black and white cheapens trying to make a performance appear more authentic, but Mars didn't need it anyway. He sang his stuff so hard he went insta-hoarse, and looked like he had a lot of fun doing it. B.o.B.'s sweet grin indicated gratitude, even if he didn't go home with any awards. Monacles are the new Grammy Award.
And Janelle Monae -- as much as everybody wanted to hear "Tightrope" -- nailed "Cold War" and capped it off with a stage dive. Her continued appreciation of tuxedos and mad dance moves made for the perfect showcase and the threes' shared aesthetic.
