Best and Worst of the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards: Chelsea Handler, Taylor Swift, Kanye West

How did Lady Gaga, Eminem and Justin Bieber fare at the

Worst: Chelsea Handler

Worst: Chelsea Handler

It pains me to say it, but Chelsea Handler was in over her head with hosting duties. The stage was just too big for her and the audience too distant. She boringly oscillated between jokes about sleeping with rappers and jokes about partying hard, sometimes with a dash of absurdist bad behavior (like trying to steal Justin Bieber's "wig").

Handler seemed handcuffed by tactless writing, some jokes so flat you could see the disappointment creep across her face as the monitors rolled. These include mostly cringe-worthy swipes at women, almost all women -- from Taylor Swift's purity image to Mariah Carey's age. Naturally, when your subjects are limited to Ke$ha's dumb name, professional trainwreck Lindsay Lohan and the brain-suck that is "Jersey Shore," things are gonna be a little rough. I just didn't think it could be this rough.

And, yes, that's Handler riding Rick Ross, riding a motorized cart.

Are you kidding? So Swift gets a worst for her song about the incident but Kanye gets a best for his??? Her's was mature and good nature, telling her story like she always does, his was just another immature punk manuever.

daggor I agree as well. Kanye cannot be congratulated for being a raging narcissist. The man's only talents are production and presentation, no real artistic talent.

Sooo giving an A for performance and a B for the song gets her put on the worst list? Way to be inconsistent.

She sounded tone-deaf and weak. We didn't need that video to know what the song was about...

"Now, it seems like Swift is doing the same."
-Um, she's be using that incident to her advantage ever since it happened. More people know Swift because of Kanye, and she knows that.

  • Taylor Swift's whole victim shtick is getting old fast, its been a year and she's acting as if she got raped - he took a microphone away from you for a minute, thats it.

Eminiem doesn't spit fire. He shouts simplistic rhymes in a repetitive fashion, if that's what you mean. There were no GOOD rappers present on stage yesterday, just... popular ones. If Weird Al can imitate your style, then you aren't "spitting fire."

Besides the obvious reasons (money and ratings), why does MTV even bother with this dog and pony show anymore? I know I'm not making an original point here, but it's just stupid for them to stop playing videos (do they even show videos on MTV2? that network was set up to show videos when MTV stopped) and then have an awards show about them.

  • Mostly agree with choice but i think Linkin Park killed it! Oh yeah, Florence + the Machine should get more credits than just a few sentence. Their performance is totally the best!

Nothing against Chelsea Handler, but how MTV thought that her shtick would work at the VMAs is beyond me.

I like how lady gaga's 15 second performace was the best vocaly all night. Taylor is tone deaf and kanye is a rapper that tryed to sing, and faired alright... I don't know why they didn't this years VMA's GMA's (Gaga Music Awards) because she won alright everything :)

Swift had already been a top selling artist when this whole Kanye thing happened...she did fine the other night. Hey give her a break, she doesn't lip sink or auto tune like most of the others

Jackie She uses plenty of auto tune. I mean, how can she have smooth clear vocals on recording but sound like crap live? I wonder...
