Worst: Thin, stock characters
One could imagine creating a checklist of characters for standard monster or alien invasion movie. Run down that list in your mind and you come up with folks like "crazy scientist," "weary soldier," "clueless officials," and "love interest in harm's way." As good as some of the other things about the movie are, here, in terms of characters and their depth, there are simply too many tick marks on that checklist and too few characters who don't fit into the molds. In fact, you may be hard-pressed to find any character here whom you haven't already seen in several other films and there is little to nothing offered to make them differ from that which has come before.
