Best and worst: Surprisingly limited scale and scope
On one hand, it makes sense for "Dawn" to sort of be the "Empire Strikes Back" of this series. It doesn't have a ton of narrative meat on its bones and serves as a bridge to a bigger episode. And yeah, given the fact that the story is about a community of humans looking to reach out to other potential survivors, a touch of the claustrophobic is understandable. But it was all just surprisingly drawn down, and to be a major sequel to a movie that frankly had bigger set pieces, you would have expected a larger sense of scope. No doubt we'll get that when the next film brings war ("War of the Planet of the Apes?"), but this movie more or less takes place in a five square mile radius and I guess I just wasn't expecting that.
