Why: While Affleck gives a fine performance in the period thriller its his direction which really set this best picture winner apart. Affleck, in particular, stages an immaculate sequence where even though history tells us the six Americans escape you're still at the edge of your seat wondering what goes wrong. Affleck was shockingly passed over for a best director nomination, but was rewarded for his craft with an Oscar in the most prestigious category of all.
