Cannes Film Festival 2013

Best and Worst of 2013 Sundance Film Festival

Nicole Kidman, 'Upstream Color' and 'Before Midnight' make the cut

WORST: 'Who Is Dayani Cristal?'

WORST: 'Who Is Dayani Cristal?'

Director: Marc Silver
Stars: Gael Garcia Bernal
Lowdown: If you need proof that story structure is as important in a documentary as in a narrative film, check out Marc Silver's immigration drama, which was one of the Festival's openers. All week long, attendees could be heard admiring the Arizona forensic mystery and even the human drama back in Honduras, but it was virtually impossible to find anybody willing to defend the solid third of the movie in which "Motorcycle Diaries" star Gael Garcia Bernal simulated a 60-day series of border crossings by taking buses, trains and boats leading up to The Fence in Mexico. Was it supposed to be a reenactment? The pilot for the new Travel series "Gael Garcia Bernal's Worst Vacations Ever"? Or was it just a misguided opinion that without the help of a slumming movie star, audiences wouldn't be able to humanize a journey that thousands of less pretty, less famous people take every year? My [Dan's] review is an example of the dangers of writing a review before internalizing a movie and realizing how much something that seems a little annoying at first becomes a crippling drawback as you reflect further.
