Best (and a worst): Band breakups and hiatuses
Aerosmith needed to discontinue because of inner-band tiffs and Steven Tyler's need to get healthy from a drug habit in rehab. Oasis' sibling rivalry appropriately brought their band to a halt, after months (and, frankly, years) of bickering. Foo Fighters gently went on their indefinite hiatus, putting out a "Greatest Hits" set and setting Dave Grohl free on Them Crooked Vultures. Nine Inch Nails called it off with a brilliant tour, with integrity, dignity -- and with warning. Fall Out Boy, too, seriously. These are all good things.
The only major bad: Beastie Boys on hiatus because Adam Yauch got cancer. He's apparently healing, and their "Hot Sauce Committee" album is shelved until things are in the clear. Get better, MCA.
Meanwhile, Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band said they'll all be on hiatus for a year or two for come, while Red Hot Chili Peppers ended their hiatus this fall.
