How did Kanye West, Adele, Outkast and Nicki Minaj stack up?
Best: Eminem and Elton John - 'Stan' (2001)
Eminem had come under fire for homophobic and misogynistic lyrics on his nominated album, “The Marshall Mathers LP,” and Elton John rode in to save the day —in a orange and pink day-glow suit, no less— singing Dido’s part. After no interaction between the two during the song, they give each other a slightly awkward hug at the end. The performance was fine, but it was the message that the two artists sent that elevated the moment: John, defacto representing the gay community, showed support for Eminem’s artistic choices, and Eminem, who’s spoken out in favor of gay marriage, showed that he’s not homophobic…at least not in his real life. His lyrics, including last year’s “Rap God,” continue to be questionable.
