Best: Jennifer Hudson’s Whitney Houston Tribute (2012)
The Grammys had a problem: How to honor Whitney Houston appropriately 24 hours after her death and not take away from the honorees’ big night. And how to do it in a way that wasn’t overly maudlin. Two words: Jennifer Hudson. With a single spotlight on Hudson on an otherwise dark stage, the singer delivered a note-perfect rendition of Houston’s signature song in a way that didn’t seem to exploit the tragedy. Hudson’s performance, accompanied only by a piano, was elegant, emotional, but not overly so, and flawless.
