Best: 'Behind the Candelabra'
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Cast: Michael Douglas, Matt Damon
Why: Sadly and almost shockingly shut out of the Grand Jury awards, "Candelabra" features Michael Douglas and Matt Damon as famed Vegas showman Liberace and one of his later loves, Scott Thorton. Lauded by both film critics at Cannes and TV critics in the states (it's already screened on HBO), "Candelabra" chronicles the rise and fall of a doomed relationship between a younger man and his rich lover. Douglas completely transforms himself into the flamboyant piano player and is superb weaving Liberace's passive aggressive brand of manipulated love. Damon, who hasn't been this good in years, has to slowly convey Scott's increasing paranoia and frustration with his relationship. Soderbergh is standing by his claim "Candelabra" is his last film and if it is? What a way to go.
