Best part of the original: Tommy Lee Jones adds gravitas to just about everything he's in.
Worst part of the original: Most of the rest of it.
Why it deserves a remake: Sure, there are much worse disaster movies out there than this Clinton-era goof (including 1997's other volcano movie, "Dante's Peak"). But "Volcano" was uneven in a way that made you wish they'd drop Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Heche's frequently awkward attempts at drama and simply embrace the silliness of it all. Is it too ridiculous to suggest a You Are There documentary-style look at what happens when a volcano suddenly forms beneath the crowded streets of L.A. (say, on the Fourth of July)? It could be like "Cloverfield" meets "Miracle Mile," but with lots and lots of lava.
