Can 'New Girl' bounce back? Part II
Answer: I'll grant that the component pieces of "New Girl" have, at times, been funnier in individualized isolation this season. There have been episodes that I've found Nick's flop-sweat, stream-of-consciousness desperation funny, ditto with Schmidt's romanticized monomania and I'll always insist that Zooey Deschanel is better than she's ever given credit for. But in terms of cumulative storytelling? "New Girl" has lost the thread and I don't think it'll ever recover. The characters and their storylines are lost in little silly epicycles, rarely connected to growth, progression or even to things from their past. Nick has to teach Schmidt how to do laundry? Ummm... OK. I guess that's a B-story. Cece contemplates getting a breast reduction? Ummm... Sure, we can do that and never mention it again. These days, "New Girl" feels like episodes are being aired out of sequence, or like nobody even cares about the bigger picture. The new generic opening credits are sadly appropriate.
