Step 18: 'The Babadook' (2014)
Reason for placement: After schooling your subject in the classics, introduce them to a much more recent masterpiece: Jennifer Kent's insanely good 2014 supernatural horror film "The Babadook."
Why it will win them over: Had "The Babadook" not been a horror film, Essie Davis would have been the subject of Oscar chatter for this performance; as a reluctant mother coming unhinged, she is by turns fierce, heartbreaking and genuinely terrifying. As with all great fright flicks, its scares are come packaged with a deeper thematic resonance about life's ultimate terror: being a parent.
Crossover hook: The film was championed by no less an icon than "The Exorcist" director William Friedkin.
Follow-up recommendations: "The Conjuring," "The Entity"
