Step 17: 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre' (1974)
Reason for placement: "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is arguably the scariest "classic" horror film of all time, a brutal exercise in sustained tension. Even I can barely handle this.
Why it will win them over: "Win them over" is probably the wrong term to use with a film like "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre." Like Leatherface with that sledgehammer, it doesn't win you over so much as batter you into terrified submission. That said, it's difficult not to admire Tobe Hooper's surehanded direction even as you feel like bolting from the room.
Crossover hook: "Texas Chainsaw" was named the greatest horror film of all time in a 2010 Total Film poll, and also made the top spot on Slant's 2013 list.
Follow-up recommendations: "Tourist Trap," "Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2"
