HitFix: So how on Earth did you go through those first two weeks of live performances without playing the guitar?
Didi Benami: Not playing the guitar? Well, technically I just started playing the guitar between two and three years ago. Not too long ago. The first time I ever picked up a guitar and played in front of any audience whatsoever was in April of last year. So I'm not so used to it, in general. So I just wanted to get up there and show people that I can sing without a guitar and if I feel it with a guitar, I'm going to play it with a guitar. But I can't shred the guitar or anything like that. I'm definitely no huge guitar player.
HitFix: And yet the Hollywood week performance of the Kara song with the guitar seemed to be what the judges wanted from you...
DB: I play the guitar, but I'm a finger-picker. I can just finger-pick songs and do things that feel chill and right for me to do. That Kara song, I just watched over and over again and learned how to do it. I think if you work hard enough at anything, you can do it and I had a little bit of time to learn it.
HitFix: When you compare your comments with guitar to without, does that make you want to do more guitar performances?
DB: Yeah, there's definitely pressure for me to play the guitar and not just sing. For sure. It's good, because it's pushing me to do something that's not in my comfort zone, so I'm doing it. We'll see what happens. Yeah, it's a little bit of pressure and it's definitely what I want to do, but I feel like I'm still a developing artist. I'm still somebody that is working towards this.
HitFix: So what's your dream theme?
DB: I would love to have a Michael Jackson night.
HitFix: And the nightmare theme?
DB: I know this is weird, because I just said I wanted a Michael Jackson night, but I really don't want an '80s theme. Other than Michael Jackson, I did not listen to '80s music at all.
