3. Clint Eastwood
Best Performance as an Actor: "Million Dollar Baby" (2004)
Best Film as a Director: "Unforgiven" (1992)
Why: It's funny. I'm no huge fan of Eastwood's "Million Dollar Baby," but I love his performance in the film. "Unforgiven," meanwhile, is one of the greatest films ever made in my humble view. No surprise that the two, spotlighted here, represent Eastwood's two Best Picture Oscar victories. Eastwood transitioned from hunky leading stud to respected filmmaker in a purposeful way, starting out slow with "Play Misty for Me," nothing more than he could handle, bringing friend and mentor Don Siegel in as a guiding light, etc. He's made a career on trimming the fat of production, which has yielded stripped-down genius here, undercooked trifles there, but when he's been on, he's really been on.
