Hitchcock nailed down his second Best Director nod in a row for the heavily Selznick-influenced "Spellbound," which also found itself in the Best Picture lineup. Michael Chekhov's performance as a psychiatrist in a film about, well, psychiatry. It was all very fresh then, you see, even if it is a bit strained to watch today. The Salvador Dali-assisted sequences are interesting, though, and probably went a long way to securing nods for black-and-white cinematography and special effects. The film won the Oscar for Miklós Rózsa's original score, though it's been said Hitchcock never much cared for it.
