"Rear Window" (1954)
Nominations (4):
Best Director
Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay
Best Cinematography, Color
Best Sound Recording
One of Hitchcock's greatest thrillers, "Rear Window" brought Hitchcock's second of three lone director nominations over his career (as in, recognition for directing films that did not receive Best Picture nominations). It's an astute call by the directors branch, given the unique visual storytelling on display. John Michael Hayes would be nominated for his adaptation of Cornell Woolrich's short story, while the sound recording and cinematography would also get some love. Alas, no wins, as "On the Waterfront" was the Academy's favorite that year (though being a black-and-white film from an original concept, it didn't compete with "Rear Window" outside of Best Director).
