Some actors deserve to be bigger stars than they are, here are our favorites
Best known for: "Eastbound and Down," "Deadwood," "Martha Marcy May Marlene," "The Sessions"
What's next: "Everest," "The Driftless Area"
What's missing: Hawkes has been on the cusp of jumping from a recognizable character actor to a legitimate lead for at least five years. He even received a best supporting actor nominations for "Winter's Bone" in 2011 and, shockingly, was shut out for "Martha Marcy" and (even more inexplicably) "The Sessions." Still mostly ignored by Hollywood studios, Hawkes has found consistent work in prestige and indie films. To make the jump he either needs a major name director to cast him in a leading role (it actually hasn't happened yet) or, frankly, he needs either two or three more Oscar nods or to actually win one.
