#6: Inverting the hell out of some tropes.
“Supergirl” has a great time playing around with some age old tropes. Jimmy Olsen is now James Olsen, an award-winning ADULT photographer that knows more than he's letting on. Kara’s co-worker Winn is an IT specialist who also has a penchant for sewing since he created Kara’s costumes. Instead of brooding on what it means to be a hero, Kara is ecstatic to finally start helping people and can’t wait to tell her friends. Her enthusiasm to explore her limits made for one uplifting musical montage. When Kara is in trouble, it’s her sister Alex that saves her…nicely bookending the opening sequence. In a superhero landscape that leans heavily into the gritty and dark, it’s nice to see another hero who actually ENJOYS their job.
