5. 'Dark City' (1998)
Director Alex Proyas's followup to The Crow is a wildly ambitious film that stunningly merges film noir with sci-fi to tell the story of an amnesiac played by Rufus Sewell who's been accused of a committing a series of ritualistic murders. The story, which takes place in a gorgeously bleak metropolis that feels like 1940s America as styled by Fritz Lang, features at its core a group of mysterious beings known as the Strangers who have the ability to rearrange the physical world using the combined power of their minds. In the movie's thrilling climax, Sewell's character does battle with the Strangers using his newly-implanted psychokinetic powers. Dark City didn't do well on release, but it's developed into a bona fide cult film in the years since and merits a second look.
