Who will be left standing by...August?
Director: Spike Lee
Stars: Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Imperioli, Sharlto Copley
Release Date: October 11
Festival Speculation: Venice, Telluride, Toronto
Why: In the same year that South Korean genre iconoclast Park Chan-wook is making his US debut with “Stoker,” Hollywood is completing it end of the exchange program by having Spike Lee remake one of Park's signature films, the gleefully undisciplined 2003 revenge thriller “Oldboy,” in which a respectable citizen inexplicably held captive for 15 years wreaks havoc upon his release. The original, which won the Grand Prix at Cannes, is unabashedly grisly genre fare. A remake doesn't promise typical awards material, particularly given that Lee has excelled mostly in documentary filmmaking in recent years, but the cast is strong and anticipation is high.
