Who will be left standing by...August?
“Inside Llewyn Davis”
Director: Joel and Ethan Coen
Stars: Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, John Goodman,
Release Date: TBD
Festival Speculation: Cannes
Distributor: CBS Films
Why: These days, a new Coen Brothers film must be included in any prospective Oscar conversation by sheer default, given that three of their last four features (“No Country or Old Men,” “A Serious Man” and
“True Grit”) found their way to a Best Picture nomination. Still, something has seemed odd about their latest or a while now, beginning with that long-listed but plainly never actionable February 2012 release date and the fact that it's being distributed by CBS Films, who have never before had an awards player on their slate. (Perhaps not coincidentally, they're also releasing the disastrous Coen-scripted “Gambit” remake.) Still, this study of a young musician navigating the New York folk scene of the 1960s looks handsome – it's shot by Bruno Delbonnel, rather than their regular collaborator Roger
Deakins – and boasts a soundtrack produced by T Bone Burnett and Marcus Mumford. So at least Grammy attention is guaranteed.
