25 Movie Sequels Hollywood Should Have Made

'Master and Commander'

The chemistry between Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany was exceptional in this adaptation of some of the stories from the popular series of books, and even so, the movie just plain cost too much for Fox to consider making another one.  I've seen people suggest an HBO series, but I don't want to lose the sense of scale and immersive reality that Peter Weir captured so well with the film.  Many of the films on this list are adaptations of books that are part of a series, which is what makes it so frustrating when they can't get the film series to work.

I forgot to add that I would love to see a high-budget / High-quality remake of "Dune", but not necessarily a sequel to David Lynch's version

'The Last Starfighter' SUCKS, plus Scott Pilgrim vs the World showed how interested people were about game related movies. And damn, 'guide to the galaxy' left a TERRIBLE taste in my mouth.

Boo on the Star Wars diss. Your ignorance is predictable. But hooray for the Serenity nod. Still doesn't save you from your folly.

mj As long as Lucas doesn't write it or direct it I'd love to see more movies in the Star Wars universe.

papersun Most definitely "Midnight Run." Unfortunately, someone was allowed to create cheez-wiz quality knockoffs as made-for-TV movies, starring Christopher McDonald as Jack Walsh. The titles alone (Another Midnight Run, Midnight Runaround, and Midnight Run For Your Life) suggest how abysmal these productions were. It would have been amazing to see the REAL Jack Walsh, Jonathan Mardukas, Eddie Moscone, Alonzo Mosely, Marvin Dorfler, and Jimmy Serrano come together again. Some of the most colorful characters ever to appear on screen.

Shaun Contact? The Jodi Foster movie based on Carl Sagan's novel? Good film, and an even better book, but given that Sagan never wrote a sequel (and never wrote another novel for that matter) that won't be happening.

An aside, read the Sagan novel if you ever get the chance... The movie is very much in the spirit of the book, but there are some BIG differences. I won't give any spoilers but it's a wonderful read. The Cold War stuff is outdated (and was left out of the movie), but it's still great.

Good list. "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", in particular...f**k yes!

Not sure if Kilmer can convincingly play the svelte Gay Perry, but this needs to happen.

The fact that the best Hollywood can do in reuniting Downey and the smokin' fine Michelle Monaghan is f**king "Due Date" makes me violently ill.

They couldn't make a sequel to the Golden Compass (Northern Lights) because they screwed up the ending by having the one boy live instead of being ripped apart from his daemon and the girl fleeing from her father because of his role in it. That big plot hole made it impossible to do the next to books without having to dramatically change the stories.

Shaun Chances are it would be a reboot, Tarra, as a lot of time has now passed and I'd have to guess the girl who played Lyra has grown too big anyhow.

I wasn't suggesting, weeks ago, that they do a sequel. Just that the source material is excellent and worthy of a film series if they can do the material properly, and not water it down or make all the cuts they did.

A shame the first try didn't turn ou better, however, since the casting was great. Just a lousy adaptation of a great book(s).

There should never be a sequel to the Series of Unfortunate Events movie. Jim Carrey played Count Olaf as such a comic relief character, it was nothing like the book and it was terrible! What they should do is start over with the series. Get a new guy to play Olaf and keep it true to the books. Also, try making each book its own movie - squeezing 3 in 1 just didn't work for me.

Shaun There won't be any sequel to Snicket movie that was made... Way roo much time has passed and you'd have to recast all the kids.

I didn't mind the one movie that was made, but a less comical Olaf would be cool. As for cramming 3 books into movie, I thought the filmmakers did a reasonably good job. Each of the books are short, probably too short to support a movie for each book, and with 13 books in all there's no way each pme would get made on its own.

The obvious solution, and I'm surprised no one's said it yet, is to reboot and make it a TV miniseries. I don't know if Paramount/Nickelodeon still owns the rights or not, but I'd like to see a channel like HBO take a crack at making it into a miniseries.

The Princess Bride needs a sequel, with all the original actors... except for Andre the Giant, of course. How fun would it be to see these characters again?

alright. first off to say they "faithfully adapted the film" version of a Series of Unfortunate Events is complete bs. They tried to cram books 1-3 into one movie unsuccessfully and anyone who has read the book will know that the plot goes from book 1 to 3 then back to 2 and then ends with 1 again. It was COMPLETELY out of order. Secondly, Emily Browning is now too old to play Violet Baudelaire, as are the other children in the movie and they have to completely recast it. Thirdly, the Incredibles (and I know I'm one of the few who has this opinion, however) was a HORRIBLE movie the first time and needs no sequel. Just like Cars needed no sequel. The only movie on this list that I agree with is Galaxy Quest, which was amazing.

Shaun What on earth could you dislike about The Incredibles?? Wonderful, fun movie that is easily better than most of the superhero/comic book fare that's been made over the past decade or so (not to mention any superhero film made before that). Great cast, and funny stuff. What's not to like? A world of difference between that movie and the "Cars" offerings.

I love Galaxy Quest, but that first movie stands alone perfectly. They got their "show" back... Where do you take the characters from there? I'd likely watch a sequel, but I just don't know if it would be anywhere near as good as the first one.

Luc Besson wanted to make a "Leon" sequel, but it never happened. The people involved in the first movie felt that to much time had gone by, to make a follow up. Instead he made "Colombiana" a movie about a girl, becoming an assassin after witnessing her parents murder.. If I'm not mistaken.. But I would absolutely LOVE a "Leon" sequel.

I thought the Last Boy Scout was one of the worst films I've ever seen! ALL of the characters-- ALL of them, including the supposed "hero" (we're supposed to feel he's justified in killing all these people just because he's the good guy?) AND including the 13-year-old girl, were despicable, annoying people who made me feel a more satisfying ending would have been if they'd ALL died!

I don't want to see another sequel to The Mummy now, but at the time the first film came out, I thought it had big franchise potential. The mistake they made was sticking with the mummy stories. If they had just used Brendan Fraser's character and sent him on different kinds of adventures that had nothing to do with mummies, they could have had the next Indiana Jones on their hands. Real missed opportunity there.

Been working on my new house all summer, so I just saw this article. Agree with a lot of the above and would like to add(though I know ther is no way it will happen) the finale of the Chinatown trilogy. If nothing else, it would be great if Towne would publish it(if he ever got around to writing it.
