25 Movie Sequels Hollywood Should Have Made
25 movies that Hollywood should have given us sequels to
We've just crossed the record-breaking mark for most sequels or prequels in a single year, and it's only July. So far, we've had 2,174 films this year that have been follow-ups to earlier movies in some form. Give or take a dozen.
Why? It's all about easy recognition, about building a brand, bringing audiences back for more. Just recently, I saw "The Lincoln Lawyer," based on a Michael Connelly novel that's part of a series, and based on the film and the supporting cast of characters, I'd totally be excited to see them do another book in the series. I don't think there's a chance that's ever going to happen, of course, but that would be the sort of sequel I'd be happy to see happen.

chudleycannonfodder Between working on Tintin, Marvel, and the final Blood and Ice Cream movie, he's got plenty of great stuff to work on for years to come.

July 3, 2011 at 12:24AM EST Reply to CommentI 100% could not agree with you more on The Incredibles.....I want a second movie SOOOOO Much....but I want it to be for the right reasons. Unlike Cars 2 (sorry, I refuse to believe anyone at Pixar who claims it wasn't financially motivated).
Lee Harvey Maybe I'm just no fun. The only movie on this list I would want to see a sequel to is The Incredibles. Although, I'd be interested to see Portman play Mathilda again.

And once again I have to agree with you when it comes to D9. Such a PERFECT movie...I'm afraid a second one might just sully the first. But there's always the chance it could be amazing!

Jonah Spaceballs 2 will never happen. It is law. Here is the story:
July 8, 2011 at 5:04PM ESTWhen Mel Brooks approached George Lucas and said he wanted to do a "Star Wars" parody, Lucas agreed on two conditions:
1) No merchandising
2) No sequels
parody Parody is legally protected. So Mel Brooks may have asked *for politeness* (like Weird Al does), but he definitely doesn't legally have to.

July 3, 2011 at 1:29AM EST Reply to CommentI most definitely concur with Unbreakable, Zero Effect and Remo Williams.
I would love sequels to the first two and probably a reboot of Remo. I think Fred Ward is a bit too old now.
Unbreakable is somewhere in my Top 10 Super-hero movies of all time. If MKS could somehow make a great sequel to it I would gladly put up with a MKS marathon of all his stinkers.

July 3, 2011 at 1:54AM EST Reply to CommentAbsolutely, resoundingly YES to more Lucky Jack -- Master and Commander was fantastic and there are something like 20 more books in the series.
I am fine with just the one Galaxy Quest as that film is just a perfect little gem.
What I would love to see is the TV series Justified (about as spectacular a Leonard adaptation as we've seen) open up a little and bring in some of the other Elmore Leonard characters we've seen on film. Ray Nicolette or Karen Sisco making a swing through Harlan County would be sweet.

Another one that comes to mind is Shoalin Soccer, though preferably not by hollywood and would be useless withouth Steven Chow steering the ship.
Megan Oh there is a Bill and Ted 3 in the works. http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1661245/keanu-reeves-bill-and-ted-3.jhtml

July 3, 2011 at 4:54AM EST Reply to CommentCars 2 is 100% about the licensing money they make off the property (HUGE) and nothing to do with having a story to tell or 'fan' demand. The only fans they're interested in with that sequel are 3-5 year olds...but hey why not. It's Thomas the Tank Engine for cars, and everyone involved is making a mint.
yeehaw81 Love cars 2 anyway, nomatter what you say.

July 3, 2011 at 8:38AM EST Reply to CommentNo mention of Sin City? Or is this sequel actually happening?
Monterey Jack I think they missed their chance for a sequel when Brittany Murphy died. I can't imagine anyone else playing Shellie[sp?]. Plus, the resounding box office belly flop of The Spirit probably stuck a fork in this kind of "all green screen, all the time" comic book movie. Had they gotten the sequl in theaters by 2007 or so (before Brittany Murphy got that horrible lip-plumping surgery), I would have loved to have seen an adaptation of A Dame To Kill For, with Salma Hayek as Ava.

July 3, 2011 at 8:58AM EST Reply to CommentCannon's Spider-Man and Masters of the Universe 2 were supposed to filmed at the same time by Albert Pyun, but rights fell apart as did Cannon. Pyun quickly made Cyborg with the sets and props made for the films, so Cyborg is sometimes listed as Masters of the Universe 2. Pyun has test footage of how Spider-Man would have swung through the city, and there is a teaser for Joe Zito's almost version before Pyun's for Cannon on YouTube.

July 3, 2011 at 11:46AM EST Reply to Commentummm....how about we all agree that sequels for the most part suck, and ruin already great movies. It probably because of articles like these that we are bombarded with shit sequels, remakes, reboots and prequels every year. How about we get Hollywood to make original ideas and original concepts. I'm sorry bout 9 times out of 10, a sequel is complete shit, so to endorse the making of them is a crime.
Dustin Hiser Yeah, it's obvious we get sequels and remakes and reboots and prequels because of internet blogs, not because they make money. So sound. Would we have gotten a horrible sequel like Exorcist II: The Heretic were it not for blogs? I think not!
July 3, 2011 at 1:30PM ESTShawn Ok, I did not mean to take it literal. All I am saying is that most sequels are crap. So an article in their honor seems a little bit absurd to me. Maybe this is me personally, but most sequels do absolutely nothing but tread water or their just bad.
July 3, 2011 at 11:12PM ESTMatt I hate comments like this. Making sequels is not a bad idea, it is in fact a great idea. Taking something an audience loves and giving them more of it is a fantastic idea. However, sequels are rarely made for the right reasons. Being that every person on the planet knows this, the author of the article assumed that did not need to be said and created a list of movies that sequels could have been great for. Come Shawn use a little common sense.

July 3, 2011 at 6:14PM EST Reply to CommentI love this article, and agree rabidly with 3 in specific(Out of Sight/Jackie Brown; Big Trouble in Little China; The Last Starfighter) for these 3 reasons:
1. Another leading role for Michael Keaton
2. Another leading role Kurt Russell.
3. A(nother?) leading role for Lance Guest.
And if those 3 things were to happen... we'd find world peace, end world hunger, cure cancer, and all babies would be born with dragon wings. MAKE IT HAPPEN, HOLLYWOODz.
Fr. Paul Hartley Yes, my vote is for Big Trouble in Little China--that was a great movie and Kurt Russell was a great semi-anti-hero.

July 3, 2011 at 6:24PM EST Reply to CommentIn all seriousness, there is a ton of ripe discussion in this piece. I've long wanted to see Shyamalan return to his "Unbreakable" mythos and hopefully get himself off the terrible schnide he's on. "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" has serious franchise potential, but only if you keep the entire cast and crew intact... it could so easily fall to the wayside in the wrong hands. And I remember hearing those "Godfather 4" rumors that suggested it would follow the past/present narrative of "Godfather 2," but instead of Vito/Michael ala GF2, it would follow Andy Garcia and a young Santino Corleone(played by DiCaprio). I'm not crazy about the Garcia stuff, but a Godfather film all about Sonny? YES. SIMPLY YES.
And as a complete horror and "Halloween" nerd, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention my fascination with John Carpenter's proposed "Halloween 4." After the Myers-less "Halloween 3" bombed, its been said that Carpenter drew up a script for "Halloween 4" that was about the town of Haddonfield coping with the tragic Halloween night years before, the way it damaged their psyche and effected its people, and that it would play much more like a "ghost story" than a "slasher." Never being able to escape the IDEA of Michael Myers, as opposed to the physical being coming back time and time again. That idea always fascinated me, and I would've loved to have seen Carpenter make that.
Codeen Dude i COMPLETELY agree with the idea of a godfather part 4. Sonny RULES!!!
July 10, 2011 at 6:49PM ESTCharli Given what Shyamalan did to the Last Airbender I'm not sure he should be doing much of anything at the moment. If he did an Unbreakable 2 it would likely not have Sam and Bruce in it (perhaps the kid discovering he has his father's gift??) and it would be shot 2d and then reworked for bad 3d.
July 10, 2011 at 10:40PM ESTPersonally I think most sequels are a waste. The only time they should be done is as a fully mapped out multi part story. Not that garbage like slapping on another half to the fully completed and perfect story that was the Matrix.
At the same time I wish that folks would stop with adapting one part of a book series and then dumping the rest. Jackson's move with taking a risk and filming all 3 LOTR's together was the ideal way to go. Then you don't have half the story, flipping a bird to the actual fans. You don't risk having to recast because someone has a prior gig and you don't end up with kids being 6-8 years older than their characters and looking it.
(for the record I also loathe pretty much all remakes and most 'reboots' also)

July 4, 2011 at 12:27AM EST Reply to CommentI would love love love to see Nick Cave's Gladiator 2!!! I hate Russell Crow for not pushing to get it made (back when he had the clout to do it). At this point I would just be happy to even see the script. In fact I thought the best thing from the X-Men Origins Wolverine movie was the opening credits that used a similar idea to Nick Cave's script. In fact that movie probably would have been a lot better if that short section had been expanded.
