Director: Justin Kurzel
Cast: Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard
Expected debut: Venice or Toronto (possible)
Why: Okay, so you've probably guessed that the picture to your left is not of Fassbender as the Bard's bloodthirsty Scot -- the film begins rolling this month, so it should hopefully be on our screens by the year's end. And it's been some time since a Shakespeare adaptation has got me this excited. While new versions of "Hamlet" and "Romeo and Juliet" come down the pike every few years, the supposedly cursed tragedy -- despite its classroom ubiquity -- remains surprisingly underfilmed. It's hard to imagine a better director to bring some visceral vigour to a straight reading than Australian Justin Kurzel, whose true-crime debut "The Snowtown Murders" was as arresting as it was stomach-churning. Fassbender, meanwhile, seems born to play this role, while Cotillard -- a replacement for Natalie Portman -- is an excitingly counter-intuitive pick for Lady M.
