The season's buzziest films from 'Attila' to 'Zero'
Director: John Curran
Stars: Mia Wasikowska, Adam Driver
Festivals: Venice, Toronto
Why we're excited: Based on a strange-but-true story, this Outback adventure is a project that has been knocking around Hollywood for a long time – so long, in fact, that Julia Roberts was attached to it in the 1990s. It finally reaches the screen with a native star, Mia Wasikowska, in the role of Robyn Davidson, a young Australian explorer who, in 1977, trekked across 1,700 miles of desert with only her dog and four camels for company. It's a premise that promises obvious scope for visual spectacle, but also an intimate character showcase for the superb Wasikowska, who's already wowed us once this year in “Stoker.” Of extra interest is the casting of Adam Driver, currently an Emmy nominee for “Girls,” as a National Geographic photographer who follows her quest. The last time director John Curran went the prestige route, we got the exquisite, underrated “The Painted Veil,” so hopes are high for this one.
