The season's buzziest films from 'Attila' to 'Zero'
13. “Attila Marcel”
Director: Sylvain Chomet
Stars: Guillaume Gouix, Bernadette Lafont, Anne Le Ny
Why we're excited: Four-time Oscar nominee Sylvain Chomet is one of the most brilliant animators in the business – his last feature, the Jacques Tati-inspired heartbreaker “The Illusionist,” was this writer's favorite film of 2010. But can his witty originality and visual acumen survive in a live-action context? That's the question that will be answered by this fantastical musical fable, in which rising French star Gouix plays an aspiring pianist whose emotional development ceased when he was orphaned at the age of two; a magical potion enables him to revisit and process his unhappy memories. There's a lot of room for error in a story this heavy on whimsy, and with the director working in an unfamiliar medium – one has to wonder why the Euro-fest circuit hasn't bitten. If only on the basis of some striking early images, however, I'm fascinated to see the result.
