"Spartacus: Blood and Sand" (Starz) Friday, Jan. 22
The blood is fake (CG). The nudity is real. The violence is carefully choreographed. And the history? Meh. Starz' new drama series is a fresh spin on the partially historical, partially apocryphal story of Spartacus, the slave turned gladiator turned revolutionary leader made most familiar by Kirk Douglas in Stanley Kubrick's film. Reimagined by Steven S. DeKnight, "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" stars Andy Whitfield as the eponymous hunk, with familiar supporting players including Lucy Lawless and John Hannah. The whole thing was shot "300"-style in front of a green screen, so it'll look like nothing you've ever seen before, unless you've seen "300."
