Snub: “The Way, Way Back” falls way, way behind
Back at Sundance almost a year ago, when Fox Searchlight paid a surprisingly high sum for the upbeat coming-of-age comedy “The Way, Way Back,” the talk was that they might be able to spin it into another “Little Miss Sunshine.” That theory certainly hasn’t panned out: critics were kind (if not ecstatic), but Jim Rash’s amiable ensemble piece didn’t quite connect with audiences when it opened back in July. Spirit voters didn’t much care for it either, it seems. Despite ticking pretty much all the indie-crossover boxes, the film scored not a single nomination today – not even for Sam Rockwell’s showy comic standout turn. Sometimes you just can’t force people to feel good.
