A colorful array of performances from legends and newcomers alike
Sally Hawkins - "Blue Jasmine"
Pros: Hawkins carries a big, fat IOU from the Academy after missing out on an Oscar nod for her Golden Globe-winning turn in "Happy-Go-Lucky." As the put-upon sister of a callous socialite, the lovable British actress provides a fine, flinty emotional counterpoint to Cate Blanchett's dynamic lead turn in Woody Allen's art house smash. Woody's women have a history of finding favor with the Academy, and the film is a strong contender for a Best Picture nod.
Cons: Blanchett's performance is such a flashy tour-de-force that voters may be blinded to everyone around her. And while Hawkins is a better-known name than she was five years ago, she's still an industry outsider.
