A colorful array of performances from legends and newcomers alike
Emily Watson - "The Book Thief"
Pros: Watson is a two-time Oscar nominee ("Breaking the Waves," "Hilary and Jackie") who brings a lot of familiarity to "The Book Thief." She also gets a colorful character to play, a woman full or fire and vinegar but with a soft center.
Cons: Speaking of "soft," that's very much what the film is itself and Fox will have a difficult time insinuating it into a serious Oscar conversation. Also, Geoffrey Rush and even newcomer Sophie Nélisse would be first in line for recognition in the acting ranks, probably, and neither is likely as it is.
