George Clooney - “Gravity”
Pros: Clooney is a six-time Academy Award nominee and two-time winner. He has a statue in this same category for "Syriana" and as a producer of last year's Best Picture winner, "Argo." Basically, Hollywood and the Academy love him. Moreover, as much as Sandra Bullock has earned a lion's share of the acting kudos for "Gravity," Clooney was lauded more than some would have expected. If "Gravity" continues its phenomenal run and is utterly embraced by the Academy, there is no reason to believe he couldn't sneak in.
Cons: Clooney has his own new movie, "The Monuments Men," that he stars in, directs and produces. His awards season energies will likely be directed toward that Sony Pictures release instead of "Gravity." Moreover, if Warner Bros. senses Bullock can win even before the nominations are out, they may solely focus on her campaign.
