"The Place Beyond the Pines" - Derek Cianfrance, Bob Coccio, Daris Marder (Original Screenplay)
Pros: A major piece of work from earlier in the year, and part of a big last hurrah for Focus Features as it has been known on the awards circuit, "Pines" is a sharply structured triptych that plays like Greek tragedy. Derek Cianfrance was in the discussion for "Blue Valentine" a few years back and one wonders if this one would have stirred serious talk if it had been released after acquisition last year or held for release in the fall this year instead of March.
Cons: I guess that final thought is backing into it, but yeah, bringing the love back around (the film was well-liked by critics) is a tall order, particularly with Focus dialing down on another film up for consideration in the very same race. Also, those who didn't see it when it rolled around, will they be convinced to throw in the screener? (If you're reading and you're wondering that very thing, yes, THROW IN THE SCREENER).
