Surveying the field of helmers from debut filmmakers to weathered vets
Jason Reitman - "Labor Day"
Pros: Reitman doesn't have a bad awards season track record going for him. He's batting .500, with nominations for both "Juno" and "Up in the Air." And with "Labor Day," he's made an old-fashioned sort of film that will resonate with certain Academy members and, moreover, reveal another shade of his talent to his colleagues.
Cons: Those two Best Director nominations came for Best Picture nominees and the Best Picture outlook for this one isn't as obvious. Paramount has a couple of things to play with and it's a very competitive year.
