A lackluster slate could bring Walt Disney Animation that elusive first Oscar win
"Despicable Me 2"
Directors: Pierre Coffin, Chris Renaud
Voice cast: Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Benjamin Bratt, Russell Brand, Steve Coogan
Pros: If they feel like rewarding commerce over art, this is the one: after taking $363 million in the US alone, this hyperactive sequel is easily the highest-grossing animated title – and second-highest grosser overall – of 2013. It’s lightweight fun, and franchise fans largely agreed that it maintained the quality level of its predecessor.
Cons: It’s a sequel to a film that the animators’ branch didn’t nominate in the first place (albeit in a year of three nominees). If the first was too lightweight or lowbrow for their tastes, this one doesn’t offer anything different, and the proficient but unremarkable animation won’t score any extra craft points.
