A lackluster slate could bring Walt Disney Animation that elusive first Oscar win
"The Wind Rises"
Director: Hayao Miyazaki
Voice cast: Hideaki Anno, Mirai Shida, Jun Kunimura, Miori Takimoto, Masahiko Nishimura
Pros: With Hayao Miyazaki's announced retirement, you'd think "The Wind Rises" could be in a position to take the win. Animators in the Academy are sure to at least see the famed director to a nomination as he waves goodbye to the form. Miyazaki has crafted a deeply felt swan song about an artist as part of the machine, a film that feels almost like a live action piece rather than an animation.
Cons: All of that said, older members might not be able to see that touch past what is ostensibly a biopic about the man who designed the war machines that would destroy Pearl Harbor and be used by kamikaze pilots against Allied forces in the Pacific Theater of World War II. And there won't be any help coming from the HFPA, which insists that all foreign movies — even animated features — be eligible for only the Best Foreign Language Film award at the Golden Globes (despite what is submitted for consideration).
