A lackluster slate could bring Walt Disney Animation that elusive first Oscar win
"Rio 2096: A Story of Love and Fury"
Director: Luiz Bolognezi
Voice cast: Rodrigo Santoro, Selton Mello, Camila Pitanga
Pros: This unusual Brazilian entry won the top prize for features at Annecy, a leading animation festival – beating fellow Oscar hopeful “Khumba,” among others. Conceptually and technically, it looks to be one of the more ambitious entries in the bunch, blending 2D and sleek digital animation in a time-traveling fantasy that sees one immortal hero pursue his great love through 600 years of Brazilian history – and into the future.
Cons: The film doesn’t yet have a US distributor, so it will need to wow the animators on its own merits – which won’t be easy with higher-profile foreign films also angling for a slot.
