Meryl Streep - "August: Osage County"
Pros: Meryl Streep eats everything in sight in "August: Osage County." The drapes, the kitchen table, certainly the script, she devours it all, sucking all the air out of the room leaving one gleaming, undeniable monolith when the dust settles: the magnificence of a movie star dominating a hugely talented ensemble. That kind of thing gets nominated all day long.
Cons: But will there be those in the actors branch who, for all the (deserved) Meryl worship that exists in the world, are turned off by how far she takes it and how much she performs for the back row in this performance? The histrionics really highlight some of the more nuanced work coming from Chris Cooper and Margo Martindale at the end of the day.
