Lowdown: It's a weak year for new dramas, but there's an easy argument for Golden Globe voters to go nuts with new shows in the comedy field this year. "Girls" and "Veep" are virtual locks to join inevitable returning favorite "Modern Family." Could the other three places be filled by "House of Lies," "Smash" and "The Mindy Project"? With ease. Absolutely, though probably not. "Smash" is probably the comedy/music equivalent of "Newsroom" here. Critics didn't love it, but it's so glutted with star-power that Globes voters may be entranced. However, because "Smash" was already ignored by Emmy voters, the Globes would loom lame, rather than like kingmakers. Figure that "Episodes" continues to resonate with Globes voters because it's practically made for them. In contrast, figure "Louie" continues to get shut out, because Golden Globe voters don't understand it, just like they don't understand "Breaking Bad" on the drama side. And with "House of Lies," remember that it's practically "Californication Jr." and Globes voters love "Californication," though that love for the new show may only extend to series star Don Cheadle.
