Christoph Waltz - 'Django Unchained'
Pro: As you may recall, things panned out pretty well for Waltz the last time he teamed up with Tarantino: “Inglourious Basterds” put the previously little-known Austrian character actor on the map, and nabbed him an Oscar. As a benevolent bounty hunter is QT’s wild-looking latest, Waltz has another showcase role – perhaps even a leading one – and again has the Weinstein campaign factor working in his favor.
Con: Waltz had the plum villainous part in “Basterds,” but in “Django,” that distinction goes to Leonardo Di Caprio, who is soaking up most of the pre-release buzz – will he outshine the ensemble? Also, with the film still unseen, we have no idea if it’s a viable Oscar play, or a little too ‘out there’ for the Academy.
