Tommy Lee Jones - 'Lincoln'
Pro: Early reactions to “Lincoln,” already regarded as an across-the-board Oscar heavyweight, consistently highlight Jones as a supporting standout in the meaty role of Thaddeus Stevens. The depth of the Academy’s respect for the former Oscar-winner was made plain when he pulled off that surprising Best Actor nod in 2007 for “In the Valley of Elah”; meanwhile, he already has an award-worthy leading turn in the more lightweight “Hope Springs” to bolster his case for 2012 recognition.
Con: “Lincoln” is crammed with big-name supporting actors, from David Strathairn to Joseph Gordon-Levitt to Jared Harris: could all this internal competition chip away at Jones’s vote total? He’s not the most active campaigner.
