Another round of living legends vs. young ingeues
Amy Adams, 'The Master'
Pro: Adams is a three-time nominee in this category for her work in "Junebug," "Doubt" and "The Fighter," but her performance as Peggy Todd in Paul Thomas Anderson's critically acclaimed drama may be her best. Adams has acted with many great actors over here career such as held her own. Here she goes toe to toe with the Philip Seymour Hoffman (who can blow any of his peers off screen) and arguably (and purposefully) dominates him in scenes. She is a prime candidate to win a number of critic's groups honors and, again, the Academy has shown they love her three times before.
Con: The only thing that will hurt Adams candidacy is the box office performance for "The Master" which has been - so far - lower than the most modest of expectations. Moreover, critics loved the film, but will the Academy? That remains to be seen.
