Another round of living legends vs. young ingeues
Frances McDormand, 'Promised Land'
Pro: Oscar winner Frances McDormand is also in Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" this year, which could help her get some traction in Gus Van Sant's "Promised Land." Focus could certainly lobby on behalf of both films
and get some combined notices from critics groups later in the season. She'll play right hand to Matt Damon's conflicted protagonist in the film, which could turn out to be a performance showcase.
Con: Or it could be merely some wholesome year-end drama and little else. Damon co-wrote the script with "The Office"'s John Krasinski and had once intended to direct, so you know this Oscar-winner has a lot invested in the project. He's had good taste along the way so he and the film might deserve the benefit of the doubt at this early stage, and that extends to McDormand and co-star Rosemary DeWitt, I think.
